Letter from the Director of Career Services

Dear Student

Welcome to the Career Adventure Program at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. We know how important it is for you to achieve your career goal and this is why we initiated the Career Adventure Program. This program is designed to assist students in their career development. The first step in the CAP is to print and complete the on-line Career Guide and set up your personal ePortfolio.

This Guide (part 1 , 2 , 3 & 4), which you can download provides a step-by-step process to help you plan your University to Career progress. It is a place to record and store information about your values, skills, ideas and dreams; and to set goals and develop plans for your future. We encourage you to complete this self-directed Guide. Your answers can be as long or short as you see fit. Your answers do not even have to be written. You may draw a picture or diagram. The Guide contains tips on working with each section and ideas on where to go for more help. Sections 1-3 of the Guide will help you identify career goals, explore career options, and make career decisions. The 4th Section will assist you in planning for your career and suggest actions you can take to prepare yourself for your chosen career field.

Section 5 is your working Career ePortfolio. This is the section where you can type pertinent information and scan in samples of your best work that demonstrate your knowledge, skills and experiences.

This Career Guide and your ePortfolio will be useful to you throughout your years at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Your professors, advisor and career counselor will encourage you to use this Guide and develop your ePortfolio through meetings with your advisor, class assignments, career development workshops and special events. As you progress in your studies and activities, you will develop many samples that illustrate your achievements and these items should be scanned in your ePortfolio. This information will be very useful when you are ready to market yourself for the career of your choice. You will be able to select your very best work, burn them onto a CD and present this "Professional Portfolio CD" to a prospective employer. In addition, following graduation from the University, you will discover that the Guide and your personal working ePortfolio will continue to be useful to you as you consider future career changes.

Through a variety of career development projects, such as resume review, portfolio development, workshops, practice interviews, mentoring, internships, and job fairs, you will maximize your opportunities in achieving your career goals. Best wishes in your "Adventure".
