To register means to formally open a credential file with our office and to submit the necessary paperwork that allows us to maintain a file with your resume, transcripts, letters of recommendation, test scores, etc. in a folder in our office. Additionally, when you complete a placement registration form we become aware of your placement needs and the specifics related to your job search. If an employer contacts our office with an opportunity we can match student and employer based on information you provide.
It is an optional service you choose. It provides a convenient way to store and handle your placement credentials, usually resume, recommendations, transcripts, tests scores or other personal documents related to the job search. It is free and provides a safe and centralized storage location. You have open access to all materials in your credential file, we don't maintain confidential letters of recommendation.
When you are applying for positions our office will copy and send the credentials on your behalf neatly bound with a cover attached. All mailings are recorded in the file. You save time and money. You will only need one copy of each of the items in your file.
Another benefit is contact with our office. This helps you become aware of job fairs, interviews, seminars or job opportunities as they arise.
First, visit Career Services and request a credentials packet. In the packet you will find the placement file contract, policy statement, registration form and a transcript release form. The packet also contains tips and other resources to help you in your job search.
While you are visiting our office you may also want to familiarize yourself with the Career Resource Library. There you will find many useful resources. Don't forget to browse the Job Search Page to learn more about these and other resources.
For your convenience the Credential Packet and letter of recommendation forms are available for you in PDF format. You may download, view or print them using Adobe® Acrobat Reader®.

Note: to use these files you must have Adobe® Acrobat Reader® installed on your computer or added as a plug-in to your browser. You can download the free software by pointing your browser to http://www.adobe.com/Acrobat/readstep.html and following the easy steps.
After you pick up or print the credential packet you should do the following:
Ideally the letters should be written by someone who has a position to have observed your skills and abilities as they relate to your career field. Supervisors and managers would be good choices. Faculty who have had you in a number of courses may be good choices also.
Ask if they can write you a candid and positive letter of reference outlining specific skills and accomplishments. Provide them with a copy of your resume for reference or better take a few minutes to discuss your goals and achievements with them. Always ask for permission to use them as a reference, verbal or written first. And, don't forget to follow up to be sure they have written the letter . Lastly, send them a note of appreciation or a thank you card.
The more specific to the job the better the letter is. If this is not practical a general letter that describes transferable skills relevant to your career goal will work fine for you.
Most students use three to six letters. Sometimes multiple letters for different career goals are included in the file and the student provides the instructions on which to send.
Career Services will keep your file for 3 years at which time it will be returned or destroyed. Your permanent academic record with the university is not affected. Any reference that is a year or more old may not be the best. It pays to keep your resume and letters of reference current if you plan to conduct another job search.
You decide what is in your file. You may contact the office anytime you have additional questions about your file or job search. We encourage frequent contact to help you stay informed of changes or new opportunities. You can reach us in a number of ways.
