Praxis FAQ
What tests do I register for and how do I do this? You will need to register for the three Praxis I PPST (Pre-Professional Skills Test) tests in Reading, Mathematics and Writing. You may take either the Paper Based or the Computer Based tests.
If you want paper based testing you will register for the Reading (10710), Mathematics (10730) and Writing (20720) PPST tests. Registration forms are in the registration booklet. You will take Reading and Mathematics in session one and Writing in the first half of session two. For more information visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/prxreg.html.
If you want Computer Based Testing you need to call the center directly for an appointment. You will need CBT Reading (5710), CBT Mathematics (5730) and Writing (5720). Phone numbers for CBT centers are in the registration booklet. Also see the booklet for fees; CBT testing has a different fee schedule than the paper based testing. For more information about CBT visit the ETS web site at http://www.ets.org/praxis/prxcbt.html.
In what building will the test be administered?
The exam will be in the Campus Center, upstairs in the multi-purpose room. Any accommodation for testing must be coordinated with ETS directly in advance. Please read the section on disabilities in the registration booklet for application procedures and documentation requirements.
What time am I expected to be there? Am I to bring anything specific?
You should be at the Campus Center before 7:30 for check in. It is essential that you bring your admission ticket which was mailed to you by ETS after receiving your registration and payment and a picture ID. Acceptable IDs include driver s license, photo employment ID, current passport, and military ID. If you did not receive your admission ticket in time, call ETS at (609) 771-7395 for instructions, have your candidate ID number ready when you call. You may also call John Harrington the week before testing to see if you are on the roster .
How long will the testing take?
The testing starts at 8:00am and goes until approximately 12:00pm if you are taking tests in both sessions.
How much does each section cost?
Each test fee is $30.00 plus a $40.00 registration fee. The registration fee is nonrefundable. You may receive a refund on the test fees if you request it in writing before the late registration deadline. If you wish to reschedule your test date to another established time, you must do so before the late registration deadline. For other registration options, see the registration bulletin.
**Please note that registration needs to be received (in hand) by the ETS in New Jersey BEFORE the dead line date. Please mail your registration at least 2 weeks before. **
Is it possible to take the tests separately or on different dates?
You may take one or more tests on any given test date; however you have to pay the registration fee each time you register to take the test. You must pay the registration fee every time you register for one or more tests regardless of whether you have to retake a test.
**You must pass all three sections to become Maine State certified. Also, you must pass all three tests prior to being approved for student teaching.**
The passing scores for both the Paper and Computerized Testing are:
176 175 175
How long will it take to get the test scores back?
The test scores take approximately 4-5 weeks to receive. A copy of your scores will be sent to you and up to three other recipients you chose when you registered. You should be sure to send one score to the Maine State Department of Education (7368) and the University of Maine at Presque Isle (3008), or the University that you are currently attending if not a student here. Your scores will not be released if you have an outstanding balance with ETS. If you do not receive scores within this time frame please call ETS to inquire about any possible problems.
Will I be able to interpret my scores?
There will be an Understanding Your Praxis Scores booklet enclosed with your scores that will explain what the scores mean. Please be very careful to note the actual numerical value of the score. There are different standards for teachers in grades K-12 then for vocational educators in Maine.
Where can I find study materials?
Copies of Study Guides from various publishers are available at the library for you to check out. You may use URSUS to locate these Study Guides.
