Services For Students With Disabilities
The Student Support Services Program (SSS) provide disability services for students with documented disabilities at UM-Presque Isle. The primary purpose of this function is to facilitate the education of students with disabilities by providing a point of coordination for any specific accommodations that they may need while attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Am I Eligible for Accommodations?
It is important to contact the Student Support Services office first to determine eligibility. Any UM-Presque Isle student with a disability, which limits one or more of life's major activities, may be eligible to benefit from our services. While people with mobility, sensory, communication, mental or learning disabilities affilate with us, so, too, do students with basic health impairments.
Eligibility for appropriate accommodations is based on a combination of the student's disability documentation, description of his/her needs, and service guidelines developed by the University. To learn how to register for academic accommodations please see "Registration For Academic Accommodations."
What Kind of Documentation Must I Provide?
Documentation should be current and include a specific description of the individual's disability, disability-related needs and recommendation for services from UM-Presque Isle's disabilities services staff. In general, the less obvious the disability, the more information is required to assess the Student's needs and develop a workable service plan. When appropriate, test scores and interpretation should be included (e.g. learning disabilities report, audiogram). Students with Learning Disabilities are encouraged to obtain a copy of "Learning Disabilities Documentation Guidelines" from our office for more detailed documentation descriptions.
The documentation of disability provided to us is confidential. This information does not become part of one's permanent student record.
How Do I Get Services?
Provide documentation of disability to the Student Support Services Program Office. Schedule an intake appointment with the director of Student Support Services, Mary Kate Barbosa at 207-768-9613 to discuss your needs.
