UMPI Merit Awards, Scholarships and Grants
Back to UMPI's Financial Aid Info
In recognition of the unique talents and interests of
its entering students, the University of Maine at Presque
Isle offers a number of merit-based awards, scholarships,
and grants. Most do not require an entering student to
show financial need.
Merit Awards
Presidential Scholarships
Four $1000 Presidential Scholarships are given to
students who have done exceptionally well in high school.
School citizenship and participation in school and
community activities are also taken into consideration. The
scholarships are renewable for up to four years if the
recipient completes a minimum of 12 hours each semester
and retains a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
at the end of each academic year.
Aroostook County Leadership Awards
Entering students who are graduates from
Aroostook County high schools, have a minimum 2.5 grade
point average, and have been actively involved in school
or community extracurricular activities are eligible for
these non-renewable $500 awards disbursed over two
semesters. Candidates are nominated by high school principals
and come to the campus to compete for the awards. During
the freshman year, candidates are required to either live in
the residence halls or actively participate in a recognized
student organization.
Campus Service Awards
Students who are selected for these non-renewable
$500 awards disbursed over two semesters will be assigned
to work for specific departments. Every effort will be made
to place students in a department related to an area
of academic or cocurricular interest.
Freshman Honors Fellowships
The Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to
10 academically promising, entering students who have
either a minimum 3.0 high school grade point average or
a minimum SAT composite score of 1000. Recipients of
the non-renewable $400 awards will be assigned a
faculty mentor, may enroll in the first year Honors Program at
no cost, and can enjoy other benefits of the
Fellowships. Fellows who earn a cumulative average of 3.25 in 28
or more semester hours will be the only students eligible
to compete for three $500 University of Maine at
Presque Isle Assistantships which are renewable for a maximum
of three consecutive academic years.
Trustee Waivers
The University of Maine System has established
merit- based tuition waivers for students whose presence on
the campus will enhance the university experience for
all students. The awards may be full or partial
waivers. Renewals, made at the discretion of the
Scholarship Committee for a maximum of four years, are based on
the following criteria: recipient contributes to campus
life, completes by the end of the first year of study a total
of thirty hours with a minimum of a 2.75 grade
point average, and each consecutive year thereafter maintains
a 3.0 cumulative average as a full time student.
Ambassador Scholarships
The University of Maine at Presque Isle believes that
the presence of Canadian students enriches the
educational experiences of all University students.
The University has established the Ambassador
Scholarship Program. Ambassador Scholarships, which
range between $500 to $I000(US),will be awarded to
first-time freshmen Canadian students. The recipients must
demonstrate academic potential and have a record of
involvement in school or community activities. The first
year scholarships will be disbursed over two semesters
and applied to tuition, fees, room and board. Recipients
are not required to live in the residence halls but must
enroll in and complete a minimum of twelve semester hours
for two consecutive terms. While the award is exclusively
for the first year, in subsequent years recipients will be
