WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP?
The primary purpose of internship is to provide students with the opportunity to observe and interact with professionals and to reflect upon lessons learned through a work experience. While students are permitted to get paid for their internships, not all companies provide compensation. Characteristics of an internship will vary from one experience to another.  Students should take the time to examine their career goals and look for an opportunity that matches those goals.

Internship Program Requirements- 8 credits, 10 weeks, 35 hours per week (350 hours)

HOW TO GET STARTED

STEP 1: Approval to do an Internship
Any student hoping to sign up for an internship must have taken the Internship Seminar class and must set up an appointment with a faculty member in the Recreation and Leisure Services Department the summer prior to starting the internship experience. ALL internships must take place during the summer.

Students must meet at least the basic requirements before setting up a meeting.

Basic Requirements

a) GPA REQUIRED: 2.00
b) At least Junior standing
c) Most REC course work completed
d) Agency Acceptance
e) Completion of REC 395 Internship Seminar Class

Students should research and begin to apply for internship opportunities as they become available. Start applying and doing your research at the beginning of the Spring semester!

Once students begin to receive offers they must submit the Initial Application for Internship as well as a current degree audit for the experiences they are most interested in. Before formally accepting an internship for academic credit, this application must be approved by a faculty member in the Recreation and Leisure Services Department.

Immediately After You Accept
Students must provide a signed copy (by the Agency Supervisor) of the Agency Requirements and Contract Agreement to the appropriate faculty member prior to starting an internship. Students will not be able to proceed for academic credit unless this contract has been signed by all parties.

There will be a mandatory meeting for all students and advisors before the last week of classes to discuss the internship requirements for the summer and assign summer advisors. At this meeting students must bring a copy of a completed Student Information Form.

ADVISORS
Once approved students will be assigned to an advisor in the Recreation and Leisure Services Department. This academic advisor will process your paperwork during the fieldwork or internship experience and submit your final grade.
