Located at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the Center is the result of a collaborative effort of the University of Maine System, the Department of Education and the local school districts. The Regional Teacher Development Center serves as a link between the University and the local schools. We help districts by assisting teachers as they navigate the certification system. The Center also manages the Maine Alternative Route to Certification (MARC) program which is designed for career changers who have a bachelor’s degree and would like to enter the teaching profession. MARC provides the newly hired teacher with appropriate and timely course work delivered in short seminars. RTDC coaches visit the participants to assist them as they implement the Maine Teaching Standards.

The Aroostook Regional Teacher Development Center is one of four currently organized in Maine. Although helping teachers attain full certification is a priority, the centers also assist teachers by providing support for teacher induction and facilitating access to graduate programs. The RTDC works collaboratively with local partnerships such as the Central Aroostook Council on Education (CACE) and ECO 2000 as they address local professional development needs. It is our belief that every student deserves a fully certified and highly skilled teacher who has access to quality professional development activities and courses throughout their career regardless of geographic location or school size.

To assure that the centers are working to meet the needs of all local educators, each RTDC region is supervised by a local board of directors. Representatives from higher education and local school districts meet on a regular basis to oversee operations of the regional centers.

Funding for the initial start up of the centers has been obtained from the Chancellor of the University of Maine System, the Department of Education and a five year grant under Title II Transitions to Teaching program.

Thank you for visiting our website. If we can be of any further assistance, please contact us at UMPI.
