Past Events
Climbing in Acadia May 3rd
OAPI journeyed south to the beautiful coast of Maine, Acadia National
Park! We were created with thick fog and a quiet cliff. Throughout
the day we set up 5 different routes on Otter Cliff and got in a total
of 19 climbs! Thanks to Lenny Cole for all of his enthusiasm and safe
guiding on the rock!!
Check out OAPI in the fall for more outdoor climbing adventures!!
Bouldering Comp April 19th
There is one word to describe the first bouldering comp held at the
Gentile Hall Rock Wall...success! We were hoping for a larger crowd
but the 7 strong, energetic competitors made it a fun and
entertaining event! We would like to thank those businesses that made
very generous donations for our prize table, Gentile Hall, Rocky
Mountain Sports, Mojo's and the UMPI bookstore.
Katahdin Winter Ascent March 14-16th
5 University students, 1 community member, and 1 University staff member joined forces to tackle Maine's highest peak! With the help of one very talented guide from the New Hampshire based guiding company, Mountain Sense LLC., the group attempted to summit Katahdin via the Abol trail on Sat morning, after camping out in lean-tos at Abol Campground Friday night. The conditions were perfect for traveling but the mountain, even in the best of conditions, is extremely challenging, and were sad to report that we did not summit. BUT, have no fear, that did not smother our excitement or enthusiasm! We had a stupendous time winter camping and learning about our personal physical limits and enjoying time outside with great company! We hope to run a similar adventure next winter!
Junior Outdoor Leadership Week
OAPI student leaders taught local children about the arts of having fun and being safe in the outdoors. We had a great time and look forward to this annual November event.
Light Parade
OAPI members danced down Main Street Sat, Dec 1, 2007 as they escorted UMPI's float in Presque Isle's Annual Light Parade. We worked hard and had fun Friday and Sat constructing the float to convey UMPI's initiative to go green. We would like to thank Claude Boucher, and the guys at the Physical Plant for all of their help constructing the float, and Dick Gardiner for the use of his trailer.
Caving in Quebec
Caving was a huge success! Thank you to Kelly Martin and Jo Bubar, our student leaders, and Eric Hendrickson for guiding. A fun time was had by all. Pictures will be posted soon.
Whitewater Rafting
September 15th, a group of 20 left Gentile Hall at 5:00am to enjoy a day full of adventure on the Penobscot River. The trip was such a huge success that OAPI will plan a trip for September, 2008. Sign up was done at the Gentile Hall front desk and for those budgeting for next year, cost was $65.00/students and $85.00/non-students. Leadership Weekend
On Saturday, September 2nd to Monday September 4th, a select group of OAPI members took part in a three day backpacking trip in order to prepare them for leading OAPI programs. These students began the trip on Friday, by preparing the meals for the weekend, looking over the trail, and discussing the itinerary. We then set out on Saturday morning to Baxter State Park’s South Branch and set out on Pogy Notch to Russell Pond. After completing the 9.6 mile hike to the campsite, students reviewed how to set-up a campsite, cook meals, apply Leave No Trace principles, basic canoeing, map and compass skills, knot tying, and most of all trip leading. Each student that took part on this trip, which was sponsored by Student Senate, is required to lead three OAPI programs for the Fall semester. Click here to see our trip photos.
Summer Camps
In summer 2007 OAPI conducted its first Outdoor Adventure Camp. Facilitated by students at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Recreation and Leisure Services program, the camp focused on introducing and building upon outdoor skills. Children ages 9-11 were instructed on orienteering, rock climbing, Leave No Trace Principles, trip leadership, canoeing, and much more. Click here to see pictures from camp. We are looking forward to seeing you again in 2008! More information coming soon.
