It’s not everyday a college student gets a congratulatory letter from the governor, but that’s exactly what Karami Ham received from Governor Baldacci in recognition of her placement in a national competition for future business leaders this summer.
A senior accounting major from Washington County, Karami attended the Phi Beta Lamda/Professional Business Leaders conference in Nashville, along with seven other UMPI students. They were joined by 1000 other college students from around the country for the annual event. While there, Karami placed in the top 10 for the Accounting Analysis and Decision Making test, and fellow UMPI student, Dilyana Pavlova, placed in the top ten on two other tests.
Karami and the other conferees had to place in the top two slots in their respective testing areas within their state in order to get to the competition. But testing seemed to be the easy part in comparison to traveling there.
After a frustrating plane flight that included several long delays capped by lost luggage, Karami arrived at her testing site only to be stopped at the door because she was wearing sandals—not the prescribed professional business attire. After explaining the lost luggage situation, the facilitator took off her own shoes so Karami could participate. Cramming her size 9 foot into a size 7 shoe, she marched in undeterred. That determination will serve her—and her employer—well in the future. However, she may think about packing a pair of pumps in her purse the next time she takes to the skies!
