UMPI CROSS COUNTY RUNS A STRONG WEEKEND |
|
|
The University of Maine
at Presque Isle Cross Country teams participated in their home opening meet this
past Saturday. Though it was a small
race (including UMPI, Unity College, and the University of Maine
at Machias), it was a quality test for the Owls. Many of the athletes ran faster than they did
on the same date last year, while the newcomers continue to make strides of
improvement.
In the Women's 5000 meter
race, the Owl's took the first three places with Brittany Proulx leading the
way at a time of 23:24. Michelle Phillips also ran a solid race
finishing a close second at 23:31. Leah Joy, in her first ever cross country
race, ran extremely well and completed the top three with at time of
24:04. Chandra Wisneski (5th,
25:02), Hannah Smith (7th, 26:47), Linda Gover (9th,
27:21), and Christine Roy (10th, 27:44) all ran solid races for
UMPI. Julie Rugg rebounded well from
last week's meet in the heat and humidity at UNE, finishing 11th
with a time of 28:44. Rounding out the
Owl women was Heather Dionne, who finished 14th in a time of 32:50;
Dionne is coming along well.
In the Men's 8000 meters,
Kurt Whisler of UMaine Presque Isle, once again paced himself very well
throughout the course and finished an impressive first, with a time of 31:54. Emerson Wright finished a strong second in
32:04, showing improvement over last year's finish. Aaron Schmersal (3rd, 32:12) had a
good start to the race, leading through 3.5 miles when he was caught by his two
teammates. Schmersal held on to finish
well and also improved on last year's time.
Scott Graham (4th, 32:50) continues to show improvement,
which will pay dividends for upcoming meets.
Kirk Robinson (6th, 33:53) and Michael LeClair (11th,
40:43) also ran faster times than that of a year ago. Chris Rines (7th, 35:43) ran a
strong race as the fifth scorer for the second time this season; and Andew
Ciszewski (8th, 35:58) continues to round into form as the season
progresses.
Both the men and women came out on top this weekend, each
with a score of 15 respectively. The
Owls will be at home this weekend, September 22, hosting Southern
Vermont and Maine Maritime
Academy for the UMPI Homecoming
race. The women are scheduled to start
at 11:00am, followed by the men at 11:45am.
