Hornets get by Owls
Saturday, 03 May 2008
LYNDON CENTER, Vt. - Despite allowing eight runs in the first inning to Lyndon State, the University of Maine at Presque Isle battled back to an 8-8 tie in the fifth, only to give up two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Owls weren't able to counter-attack in the last innings of play, as they went on to lose their last game of the season to the Hornets by a score of 10-8.
Through the afternoon rain, the Hornets hammered out five hits, and took advantage of two walks and an UMPI error, to jump out to an 8-0 advantage after one inning of play. The Owls chipped into the lead over the next four innings and tied the score at 8-8 on Corey Fournier's (Bradley, ME) two-run single in the fifth.
LSC took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame when Nick Merlo led off with a single, moved to second on Dana Biondi's sacrifice bunt and took third on an infield single by Rob Malloy. After Malloy stole second, Merlo came home on a wild pitch and Malloy scored a few pitches later on Michael Swan's run-scoring single to secure the Hornet victory. Matt Picard, who relieved Lyndon State starter Jordan Royer in the third, went six and two-thirds innings to get the win, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight.
UMPI pitcher David deKay (Hiram, ME) tossed seven innings before giving way to reliever Shane Dupuis (Truro, Nova Scotia). deKay gave up 10 runs, nine of them earned, on 15 hits while fanning six LSC hitters.
A.J. Pennartz (Birch Harbor, ME) was 4-for-5, including a two-run homer, for the Owls and teammate Victor Jacques (Gouldsboro, ME) had three hits in the loss. Dupuis had two hits in the game, and DJ Charette (Millinocket, ME) singled three times to help the Owl cause.
With the loss, UMaine-Presque Isle finishes the season at 5-19.
UMPI’s Delaney honored as Athlete of the Week
Thursday, 01 May 2008
For the second week in a row, the University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team has been well represented, earning WAGM "Athlete of the Week" honors. The recipient of this week's award is Sophomore SS Tyler Delaney for his spectacular performance over a three-game stretch last weekend.
The Athletic Training major from Truro, Nova Scotia, has been a consistent force from the plate this season for his Owl team, earning him the nickname, "the table setter," from Head Coach Leo Saucier. In the three day stretch, Delaney went 8-14 with a .571 batting average, registering two doubles, two triples, and four singles. He scored five times and earned three stolen bases in the Owl doubleheader split with Colby College and loss to Daniel Webster.
Please help me in congratulating our student-athlete for his excellent performance!
