Thursday, 10 April 2008
NASHUA, NH - The Owls lost a heartbreaker to Daniel Webster College, on Friday afternoon at Harvey Woods Field, by a score of 11-10.  The Owls fall to 2-7 with the loss.  UMPI was led by Sophomore AJ Pennartz (Birch Harbor, ME) who went 3-for-3 from the plate, knocking in two and scoring twice.  Teammate Shane Dupuis (Trenton, Nova Scotia) sparkled for the Owls, going 3-for-4, with a triple and five RBIs. Dupuis also recorded 3 stolen bases in the game.  UMPI pitcher Brandon Eli (Auburn, ME) saw seven strong innings from the mound, allowing six runs, only two earned.  He left the game with UMPI leading 10-6.

UMPI scratched for single runs in the first and third innings, and the Eagles added a single score in the second for a 2-1 game heading into the fifth.  Dupuis went to work with a three-run triple as part of a four-run Owl fifth inning.  He also added a two-run single sparking a three-run sixth inning as the Owls took control of the game.  After a Jeff Ramsell (Pembroke, ME) RBI double put the Owls up 10-3 in the seventh, the Eagles started their comeback and eventually cut the gap to 10-9 in the bottom of the eighth.

Daniel Webster's Aaron Freedman had a two out single in the bottom of the ninth that knocked in the tying and winning runs, delivering the Eagles a dramatic come-from-behind victory.  The Owls were up 9-1 in the sixth and 10-3 in the 7th, until the Eagles stormed back from their deficit.

Despite the loss, UMPI recorded its 10 runs on 16 hits, outhitting the Eagles who had 11 runs on 13 hits.  Eight of the nine Owl starters registered at least one base hit in the contest, while the team recorded 6 errors in the game.

Dave deKay (Hiram, ME) took the loss for the Owls.

Ron Spencer (Chicago, IL) was a solid 2-for-2, with a single, double and an RBI.  Tyler Delaney (Truro, Nova Scotia) was 2-for-5 with 2 triples.

The Owls look to take on Colby College in a double-header on Sunday, April 13, 2008 in Waterville.  Game times are at 12:00 and 3:00pm.

SALEM, MA - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team fell to Salem State in a make-up game played on Saturday afternoon.  With the loss, UMPI drops to 2-6 on the season.

The Salem State Vikings, ranked No. 8 in New England, scored four runs in the second inning and never looked back en route to an 11-1 victory.   Leading the way for UMPI was Freshman Jeffrey Ramsdell (Pembroke, ME) who doubled in the top of the 7th, and was then plated by a Ron Spencer (Chicago, IL) ground out to second base.  Spencer earned the teams only RBI of the game. Ramsdell also singled in the contest, as did Chuck Reece (Bath, ME) and Tyler Delaney (Truro, Nova Scotia).

Dave deKay (Hiram, ME) was on the mound for UMPI, allowing nine runs off nine hits.  He walked two and struck out four in the loss.  Brandon Boulware (Van Buren, ME) closed the game for the Owls pitching the last two innings.

EASTON, Mass. - After traveling all morning from their prior location in southern Connecticut, the University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team was back in action on Thursday afternoon at Gorman Field in Easton, Mass.  The Owls fell to the Wentworth Institute of Technology in both games of their doubleheader 15-0 and 8-4.  Presque Isle slips to 2-5 on the season with both losses.

In the first game, Wentworth sophomore pitcher Mo Gardner was too much for the Owls to handle, as he allowed only four hits, striking out four batters and walking none.  The Leopard mound finished with a six hit shutout and from the plate, earned 15 runs off 13 hits.

UMPI was led by freshman Jeffrey Ramsdell (Pembroke, ME) who went 2-2 from the plate with two singles.  1B Dave deKay (Hiram, Me) was 1-3 with a second inning double to center field.  Chuck Reece (Bath, ME), Josh Biddington (Moncton, New Brunswick), and AJ Pennartz (Birch Harbor, ME) each collected one hit in the game.

Although Wentworth scored three early runs in the bottom of the first, and three more in the 4th, the second game faired better for the Owls.   UMPI answered back in the top of the 5th, scoring their first run of the game.  Sophomore Victor Jacques (Gouldsboro, ME) broke out of his hitting slump with a big triple into right center.  Chuck Reece followed with an RBI single into right field, plating Jacques.

Wentworth counter attacked in the bottom of the 6th, scoring two more runs on three hits making it an 8-1 ballgame.  The Owls rallied in the top of the 7th inning, scoring three runs on three hits, but missed a key opportunity by leaving the bases loaded with an UMPI hitter at the plate.  The Leopards put an end to the Owl rally with a big strikeout to end the game.   Jacques came up big in the inning with a two run double to center field.  Victor finished the game going 2-3 from the plate, with 2 RBIs.  Chuck Reece singled twice in the game, earning one RBI.  Senior Shane Dupuis (Trenton, Nova Scotia) was a perfect 3-3 from the plate, all base hit singles.

Sophomore Tyler Delaney (Truro, Nova Scotia) pitched five innings, allowing 6 runs, only four of which were earned.  He walked one and struck out two.  Freshman Seth Dorr (Hodgdon, ME) pitched the final inning for the Owls, allowing 2 runs of 3 hits.

The Owls are back in action on Friday afternoon, as they face Salem State in Salem, MA.

BrandonElie.jpgBRONX, NY - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team defeated St. Joseph's College of New York 7-1 on Wednesday evening. The game was played at Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx, NY.  The park opened in 1973 as the Harlem River Park and was renamed after Clemente, the first Latino-American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. With the win, UMPI improves to 2-3 on the season.

The game proved to be a pitcher's dual as both teams played through five scoreless innings. UMPI broke the game open in the top of the 6th, scoring two unanswered runs.  Freshman Corey Fournier (Bradley, ME) started off the inning with an infield single, and reached second on a stolen base.  Senior Chuck Reece (Bath, ME) singled Fournier home with a base hit.  Reece became the winning run for the Owls, scoring off a DJ Charette (Millinocket, ME) RBI fly ball into the outfield.  The Owls secured their win in the top of ninth, scoring 5 runs off 6 base hits.  Sophomore Tyler Delaney (Truro, Nova Scotia) recorded an RBI single, as did Fournier.  Junior Dave deKay (Hiram, ME) had a squeeze sacrifice bunt to also earn an RBI in the game.  Overall, the Owls earned seven runs on 13 hits.  Chuck Reece and teammate Corey Fournier finished the game with three hits apiece, and Senior Josh Biddington (Moncton, New Brunswick) helped the Owl cause with two hits.

Junior Brandon Elie (Auburn, ME) was great for UMPI as he pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up only three hits.  He walked three and struck out five batters.  Relief pitcher Shane Dupuis (Trenton, Nova Scotia) saw action in the 8th inning, giving up one unearned run.   Dave deKay pitched the ninth and retired the final batter with a strikeout to finish the game.  St. Joe's College had one run on four hits.

NEW YORK, NY - The great part about being a collegiate athlete, especially at the Division III level, are the constant changes and surprises which tend to arise from day to day.  After being rained out from their games on April 1st, the UMPI baseball team took advantage of the change in their schedule, and decided to spend the day exploring New York City.  For many of the players, it was their first time in the "big city."

After managing to get lost, the UMPI vans eventually made their way onto Broadway and into Times Square.  The athletes were then able to spend a couple of hours touring the area and even had the chance to visit the ESPN studios.  This afternoon, the team plans to visit Ground Zero and the beautiful Statue of Liberty, before heading to their evening game against St. Joseph's College of New York.  The game is scheduled to be played in the Bronx, only blocks away from legendary Yankee Stadium.

This is all a part of the awesome experience of playing college athletics!
