UMPI baseball splits with Vermont Tech |

WINDSOR, Conn. -- The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team split a double header with Vermont Tech College on Sunday afternoon. UMPI earned a 10-0 win in the opener, before Vermont Tech rebounded to take the second game 3-0. The games proved to be a dual of the pitchers as both teams received solid performances from the mound. The Owls move to 1-3 on the season.
In the opener, Junior Dave deKay (Hiram, ME) showed excellence as he pitched a shutout, earning the win. He allowed only one hit, which came in the 6th inning in the form of a single. deKay walked only three and struck out nine in the game, as he improves to 1-1 on the season. The Owls earned 10 runs on only 5 hits and were error free from the field. Sophomore SS Tyler Delany (Truro, NS) had one hit, while teammate DJ Charette (Millinocket, ME) went 2-3 from the plate, with one RBI. Junior SS Brandon Elie (Auburn, ME) went one for one, earning one RBI. Elie also led his team with two stolen bases, as the team totaled 8 stolen bases. Freshman Jeffrey Ramsdell (Pembroke, ME) solidified the UMPI victory with an RBI triple in the top of the 6th inning.
In the second game, the tables were turned as Vermont Tech pitched a one hit shut out, earning the 3-0 victory. The no-hitter was broken up in the bottom of the 4th inning with a base hit by UMPI junior Dave dekay. It was the only base hit earned by the Owls in the game, as the they struggled from the plate; two players walked and ten were struck out. UMPI Junior Shane Dupuis (Trenton, NS) pitched a complete game, walking only one and striking out six. Of the three Vermont Tech runs, only one was earned as Dupuis gave up just four hits.
The Owls are scheduled to return to action on Monday, March 31 when they take on the Community College of New York.

Darien, Conn. - In their season opener on Saturday, the UMPI Owl's baseball team loss both ends of a doubleheader against Bates College, 19-2 in Game 1 and 9-0 in Game 2. Bates hosted the game, which was re-sited to Darien High School in Darien, Connecticut.
In the first game, senior 2B Chuck Reese (Bath, ME) having the first at bat of the season, walked, stole a base, and then scored off an RBI fielder's choice by freshman C Jeffrey Ramsdell (Pembroke, ME). Reese went 2-2 in the game. Sophomore 1B DJ Charette (Millinocket, ME) recorded the first base hit of the season, as he led off the second inning. Sophomore 3B AJ Pennartz (Birch Harbor, ME) hit a home run in the fourth inning, scoring the second and final run of the ball game for the Owls. Although the Bobcats came away with a first game victory, there were some positive signs from the young Owl ballclub; the team managed 5 hits through 6 innings.
In the second game, although the Owls were shut out, AJ Pennartz's single in the top of the 7th broke up a Bates no hitter. The UMaine-Presque Isle mound struggled early through the first innings; but relief pitcher, junior Brandon Elie (Auburn, ME), solidly completed the last two innings for the Owls, overpowering the Bates hitters while earning two strikeouts.
The Owls (0-2) will next travel to Windsor, CT to take on Vermont Technical College in a double header on March 30th. Game times are at 11:00am and 4:00pm.
