UMPI GOLF MAKES HISTORY Print E-mail
Sunday, 30 September 2007
The Owl Golf team traveled out of Maine for the first time this season to play in the Green Mountain College tournament at Killington, VT.  The UMPI men played through difficult conditions and came away with the Team Championship with a score of 381.  The runner up school was host, Green Mountain College of Vermont, with a score of 394.  Eric Jurgenson of Vermont Tech was the medalist (low score of the day) at 88.  The leader for UMPI was Matt Dubay, who shot a 91 on a tough course.

On the following day, UMPI traveled to Castine to participate in the Maine Maritime Academy Classic.  The Owls placed second with a 356; Eric Van Wiechen and Matt Dubary both shot and tied at 84, which was good enough for 3rd place in the tournament.

The Owls will be heading to Husson College on Sunday, October 7th to play in a two day tournament.

UMPI Golfer places second in Tournament Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 September 2007
On a cold rainy Maine day, the Owl golfers played their best round of the year, placing second with a score of 348.  Maine Maritime Academy had a 340 to win the tournament, which was held at the PI Country Club.  A highlight was the play of UMPI's own Eric Van Wiechen (Montague, P.E.), who was the medalist of the day with a low score of 81.  UMPI's Matt Dubay (Lincoln, Me) shot an 84, good enough for 3rd place.   Coach Ward noted that Eric and Matt have been the steadiest golfers of the year so far.  Other scorers for UMPI were Adam Bickford 89 (Auburn, Me), Paul Rucci 94 (Millinocket, Me), Tyler Sisson 90 (Arthurette, NB), Brain Mullins 92 (St. John's, NF), and Arvide Pennartz 95 (Birch Harbor, Me).

UMPI Golfers compete in unique scoring Print E-mail
Sunday, 23 September 2007
University of Presque Isle Golfers competed in a unique scoring format this weekend at the Colby College Tournament.  Instead of the usual rules of having 5 players compete and taking the top 4 scores, the Owls, who traveled with 6 players, split up into teams of two.  Each individual team of two competed against each other in different competitions including best ball for holes 1 to 6, Alternate Shot 7 to 12, and Scramble for holes 13 to 18.  Husson College won the team event with a score of 225, beating out Colby by five strokes and Bates College by six.  UMPI finished 6th with a score of 288.  The Owls were led by the pair of Eric Van Wiechen and Adam Bickford with a score of 90.

"It was a different event then we're used to," noted Coach Ward, "but it was a fun challenge and good practice before we host Maine Maritime in a match play event this Thursday."

The UMPI men's golf team will be hosting MMA this Thursday, the 27th, at the Presque Isle Country Club.  Tee time is at 1:00 pm.

Owl Golfers Compete at Intercollegiate State Championship Print E-mail
Monday, 17 September 2007
Very few collegiate sports in Maine, other than Golf, have a true state championship that includes NCAA teams, NAIA teams, and the small college or tech schools all competing for the same title.  Golfers throughout the state were able to compete against each other, this past weekend, for the Intercollegiate State Championship at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro, ME.

The UMPI men played through two tough days of Golf, in the rain, to finish 10th in a field of 15.  The Owls were lead on the first day by Matt Dubois, who shot an 89 on the day.  But, it was Eric Van Wiechen's second day score of 93 that enabled him to finish first for the team with a total two-day score of 191.  Head Coach Richard Ward is happy to see his young team, including three first-year players and two true freshmen, show a lot of improvement in their game. "We're quickly getting better with each match," commented Ward on Monday morning, "I expect that by the end of the season, we will be 25 strokes better than where we started at."

Husson College was victorious on the day with a score of 627.  Rounding out the top ten performances were: St. Joseph's College (645), Bowdoin College (645), Bates College (665), University of Southern Maine (671), University of Maine at Farmington (677), Thomas College (686), Colby College (707), University of New England (710), University of Maine at Presque Isle (769), and Southern Maine Community College (789).

The UMPI golf team will be back on the golf course at the NMCC Invitational on September 19.  The tournament will be played at the Presque Isle Country Club.
