Poultney, VT (Sunday, November 4, 2007) -  In the Association of Division III Independents Northeast Regional Tournament Consolation round, the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (9-10-1) and the Green Mountain College Eagles (9-12-1) squared off for a classic New England soccer battle.  Overtime and three penalty kicks made the difference.

UMPI opened the game with an opportunistic goal in the first half when senior forward Robert Allan (Wallace, NS) scored on a rebounded shot by freshman midfielder Joshua Peaslee (Woolwich, ME).  The second half provided more points and it wasn't until the last 16 minutes of regulation that the game would see Green Mountain level with a PK from senior midfielder Bradley Mitchell.  UMPI answered three minutes later with a PK of their own, converted by senior midfielder Matt Petrie (Old Town, ME) to go ahead by one.

With :07 left on the clock Mitchell would convert a solo effort to force overtime.  The first 10 minutes went scoreless, but in the second ten of overtime, Matt Petrie converted on another penalty kick to finish the match.  Petrie and fellow teammate, sophomore back Trevor Hews (Van Buren, ME) made the All-Tournament team.

Junior net minder for UMPI, Scott Clenchy (Herberts, SK) would make 15 saves on 27 shots.

Owl Men Lose a Heart Breaker to UMF Print E-mail
Saturday, 29 September 2007
Despite a strong defensive effort and good overall play, the UMPI men's soccer team lost a tough match to the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday afternoon.  The Beaver's were able to capitalize on an early first half goal at 7:43, but were then limited for the rest of the contest thanks to exceptional play from senior Chase Higgins (Presque Isle, ME) and sophomore Trevor Hews (Van Buren, ME).   Thought UMPI played down a man for the last 25 minutes of the game, they battled to the end.  Their sustained intensity created many offensive opportunities, but they were still unable to put the ball in the net.

The men will travel to Unity on Thursday, the 4th for a 4pm game.  They look to host Thomas College on Saturday; game time is at 3pm, and will be back on the road on Sunday, playing an afternoon game at Maine Maritime Academy.
