UMPI Owls End Season with Series at Colby Print E-mail
Friday, 02 May 2008
WATERVILLE, ME -- Colby College's tough pitching did not allow an earned run in both games of the afternoon doubleheader to earn 6-2 and 10-1 victories over the University of Maine at Presque Isle at Crafts Field on Friday.

The Owls lost four games over two days against Colby College.  UMPI closes out the season at 5-20.

The Mules got ahead quickly with four runs in the first inning of the first game, followed by two in the bottom of the third to make the lead 6-0.  UMPI rallied and scored their two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but were held scoreless in the ninth as Colby earned the 6-2 victory.

Senior Anna Lenentine (Monticello, ME) singled twice and scored once for her UMPI team.  Erin Pelleiter (Madawaska, ME), Rachel Nightengale (Hermon, ME), Dani Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME), and Nicole Russell (Newcastle, ME) registered one hit a piece in the Owl loss.

Russell pitched a complete six-inning game, allowing six runs on 10 hits, walking two and fanning one Colby batter.

In the second game, Colby once again jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in two innings of play, and secured their win in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits.  UMPI once again battled back in the top of the fifth inning.  Rachel Nightingale reached first on a fielding error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and eventually made it home on a Billie Martin (Caribou, ME) base-on-ball.  The run proved to be the only one the game for the Owls, bringing the final score to 10-1.   Freshman Danielle Humphrey earned the lone hit of the game, singling in the first inning of play.

Junior Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) pitched a complete four-inning game.  She allowed ten runs on seven hits, walked four and struck our one batter.

Our softball team recently competed in the AD3I Northeast Regional Softball Championship, which was held at Mitchell College this past weekend.  The Owl women won three of their five games, coming in third place overall!

Two UMPI players were recognized for their outstanding play throughout the weekend and were selected to the DIII Independents Northeast All-Tournament team:

Freshman Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) was a vacuum at the shortstop position.  She was 6-18 from the plate, with two singles, two doubles, and two huge home runs.  Brittany, who also just earned "Co-rookie of the year" honors along with her twin sister Danielle, earned 7 RBIs in the five games.

Junior Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) recorded a .688 batting average in five games, going 11-16 from the plate.  WOW!  Her batting frenzy included seven singles, one double, and a 3 run homer against Newbury College.  Erica finished the weekend with 10 RBIs and also had a solid defensive performance in left field.

Please help me in congratulating the entire softball team, and especially these two young ladies, for their passionate play on the diamond!
