NEW LONDON, CT - Newbury College scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the University of Maine at Presque Isle 9-8 in Sunday's elimination game of the Association of Division III Independents Northeast Regional Championship. The Owls went on to beat Mitchell College 11-0 in a consolation game to finish 3-2 in the regional.
UMaine-Presque Isle beat St. Joseph's College of Brookly, NY 10-3 in Saturyday's first game. The Owls then went on to shut out host Mitchell College 12-0 in the second game, but dropped their third game 13-11 to eventual champion Green Mountain College.
In Sunday's elimination game, junior Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) led UMPI with a home run and a double with four RBIs. Freshman Catcher Danielle Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) doubled and singled with two RBIs and teammate Anna Lenentine (Monticello, ME) added a double and two RBIs.
In the consolation game on Sunday, Lenentine hit two doubles and a single while knocking in two runs for UM-Presque Isle. Humphrey had three singles and Davis added two singles and two RBIs.
In Saturday's first game against St. Joe's of NY, Lenentine hit a triple and two singles to drive in three runs for the Owls. Junior Erin Pelletier (Madawaska, ME) doubled and singled with two runs scored. In the second game versus Mitchell, Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) hit two home runs, drove in three runs and scored three times to pace UMPI. Lenentine added a homerun with three RBIs and Pelletier doubled and singled. Pitcher Nicole Russell allowed just two hits, no runs and no walks while striking out five in five shutout innings. Finally, in the third game on Saturday, Green Mountain scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to capture the win. Erica Davis had two singles and three RBIs for the Owls and Rachel Nightingale added a double, two singles, and two RBIs.
The Owls finished third overall in their Northeast Championship, winning three of their five games, and improving to 5-16 on the season. UMPI is back in action on May 1st and May 2nd as they take on Colby College in a back to back doubleheader on the two days.
Softball Drops Doubleheader to Husson

BANGOR, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team dropped a doubleheader to Husson College on Thursday afternoon at O'Keefe Complex. The Owls fell by scores of 6-0 and 14-0 to drop to 2-9 on the season.
In the day's first game, sophomore Nicole Russell (Newcastle, ME) helped her cause from the mound by earning the team's lone base hit single in the second inning. Russell pitched a complete game of six innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits, walking only one and striking out four. The game proved to be a pitcher's dual through five innings, when in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles exploded with five runs to earn the win with a final score of 6-0. Husson pitcher, Nicky Sargent threw a one-hitter, while allowing three walks and notching six strikeouts.
"We were looking to win that first game with our best pitcher out there. It was pretty even other than that one big inning they had," commented UMPI Head Coach Mike Carlos. "We had some mental lapses and that comes from not being in game situations for awhile." Prior to the doubleheader on Thursday, the UMPI women had been without a ballgame for the past two weeks. "We played really well for two weeks after our initial start to the season, but we've had the last two weeks off," said Coach Carlos. "We haven't seen a lot of live pitching other than our practices and scrimmages. This was live pitching, outside, and on grass...and we haven't been able to go outside."
In the second game, Husson scored one in the second and broke the game wide open in the third inning with nine runs. They scored four in the fourth inning, placing the game out of reach, 14-0.
UMaine Presque Isle junior Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) saw action from the mound for three innings in the second contest. Davis gave up ten runs of seven hits; she walked five batters and struck out one. Davis led the owls with the only base hit of the game. Anna Lenentine (Monticello, ME) closed the game, pitching the final inning for UMPI. The Owls struggled with fielding errors, as they allowed four runs on one hit in the fourth inning.
The Owls are back in action on Sunday, April 20th, as the take on UMaine Farmington in a doubleheader scheduled to be played at Thomas College in Waterville, ME. The first game begins at 1:00PM.
Lady Owls split with Southern Virginia University

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The UMaine Presque Isle softball team split a doubleheader with Southern Virginia on Wednesday at Laurel Park, earning their second win of the season 13-11 before losing the second game 19-4. The Owls are now 2-7, while the Knights drop to 8-9.
In game one, Southern Virginia struck first with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. From there the Owls took over, scoring the next 10 runs, including six in the fifth. The Knights responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on five hits and continued their rally with four more runs in the sixth to get within one at 10-9. The Owls responded with three runs in the seventh to make it 13-9 and withstood a Knight rally in the bottom of the inning, limiting them to two runs to secure the win. Leading the way for UMPI was Freshman C Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) who went 3-4 from the plate, earning three RBIs in the game. LF Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) had one base hit and registered three RBIs, while teammate CF Anna Lenentine (Monticello, ME) was 2-4 with 2 RBIs.

In the second game, the Knights jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the second inning. Southern Virginia scored the runs on just one hit, taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter. The Knights made it a 14-1 game with nine runs in the third, benefiting from three walks, two hit batters, an error and three timely hits. Ashley Kazimer drove in two runs with a single, Abbie Callihan had a RBI single and Emmalani Smith drove in a run with a double. UMPI battled back in the top of the fourth scoring three runs, but Southern Virginia scored five more in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 19-4.
3B Billie Martin (Caribou, ME) led her Owl team with two hits from two at bats, earning three RBIs. Anna Lenentine went 1-3 from the plate, with one RBI.
The Owls will return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader at Fisher College in Boston, MA.

HARRISONBURG, Va.
- Eastern Mennonite University
defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle 8-0 in the first game and 6-2 in
the nightcap of their softball doubleheader Tuesday.
In the first game, Junior Erica Davis (Cumberland,
ME) allowed seven hits of eight
Royal runs, walked eight and stuck out two.
Davis had
two of the Owls three hits in the game, singling twice to lead her Owl
team. Senior CF Anna Lenentine (Monticello,
ME) went 1-3 from the plate with base hit single. Mandee Madden doubled and singled with two
RBIs for Eastern Mennonite. Anna Coleman
singled and drove in two runs in 5 innings of play for the 8-0 win.
In the second game, UMPI tied the game in the top of the
fourth as the Owls were able to score two runs on only one earned hit. SS
freshman Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME)
reached first base on an EMU fielding error. Erica Davis doubled into left field for UMPI's
lone hit, advancing Humphrey to third base.
Anna Lenentine then drove in Humphrey, earning the Owl's only RBI of the
game. Davis
also came around to score on an EMU fielding error.
With the game tied at two, the EMU pitching staff took over as Natasha Viafora
relieving starting pitcher Nicole Wadebarred
down and held the Owls hitless through the final three innings to pick up the
win.
For the Owls, Nicole Russell (Newcastle, ME)
pitched a complete game, allowing 12 hits on six runs, walking none, while
earning one strike out.
UMPI falls to 1-6 on the season and is scheduled to
take on Southern Virginia College in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

ASHLAND, Virginia - The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Randolph-Macon College by the scores of 8-0 and 13-1. With the losses, the Owls fall to 1-4 on the season.
In the first game, UMPI got behind by six runs early in the first inning, and struggled from the plate. Junior Erica Davis (Cumberland, ME) and teammate Billie Martin (Caribou, ME) both went 1-2 from the plate, earning each a base hit single. Sophomore pitcher Nicole Russel (Newcastle, ME) gave up12 hits in the loss. She walked two and struck out one.
In the second game, Erica Davis went 2-2 from the plate, including a solo homerun, giving UMPI its lone run of the game. She also singled for the Owls. On the mound, Davis gave up 13 runs on 15 hits, as she walked two batters and struck out none.
The Owls continue play on Monday, March 31, as they continue their travel to Buena Vista, VA, to take on Southern Virginia College in a double-header.
