Sunday, 28 October 2007 |
The University of Maine at Presque Isle men's cross country team became the
2007 NCAA Division III Independent Northeast Cross Country Champions this
weekend at Franklin Park, Boston. The Owls finished with a leading score of 33,
14 points better than runner up Newbury College. On the
women's side, UMPI finished a close second to Salem College, being edged out by only 6 points.
The day's conditions were
ideal for racing; there were some significant hills, but they were well placed
and manageable resulting in an overall fast course. Although the course was new to most of the
Owls athletes, all but two runners still finished the race with a seasonal best
time.
Despite not having anyone
finish in the top five, the UMPI men prevailed and won the meet due to a very
strong team effort. Each Owl physically
peaked at the right time as the men ran their best times of the season. Leading the effort for UMaine Presque Isle
was Emerson Wright (Presque
Isle, ME) finishing 6th in an impressive time of
29:10, which is a personal best for Wright.
Scott Graham (Waterville, ME) finished in 7th, just behind his teammate
with a time of 29:43 and closely followed by Kirk Robinson (Bingham, ME) in 8th, 30:01. Both Graham and Robinson ran seasonal best
times. Kurt Whistler (Fort Kent, ME) while still being nagged with injuries, ran a solid
race finishing 10th in a time of 30:41. To top off the scoring for the Owls was Chris Rines (Caribou, ME) who ran a
smart race finishing 13th, in a time of 31:32. Rines has done a great job for the team this
fall and finished the season with a personal best time. Rounding out the pack for the Owls was Aaron Schmersal (Winthrop, ME) 14th
in 31:44, Andrew Ciszewski (Caribou, ME)
15th in 31:50, Michael
LeClair (Winslow, ME) 22nd in 36:39 and Zach Tupper (Lisbon, ME) 24th in 39:05, all personal
bests for each runner. The individual
winner over the 8K race was Hirrel Siller Jr., of Newbury College, finishing in a time of 26:59 on his home course.
Michelle Phillips (Riverview, NB) and Leah Joy
(Swan's Island, ME) lead the UMaine Presque Isle women's team with a 2nd
and 3rd place finish, while both earning seasonal and personal best
times on the Franklin Park course.
Phillips ran a strong race, finishing in a time of 21:06, followed
closely behind by teammate Joy who finished in 21:34. Both runners ran a fast two miles and stayed
close to the leader throughout the race.
Rachel Richthorn, of Salem College, was the individual winner over the 5K race,
finishing in a time of 20:35. Rounding
out the top five for UMPI was Chandra
Wisneski (Amherst, NH) 9th
in 23:56, who despite a nagging injury ran a solid race, Linda Gover (Caribou, ME) 10th in 24:12, and Christine Roy (St. Agatha, ME) 11th
in 24:15. Both Gover and Roy ran a
strong race, earning both personal best times.
Finally, Heather Dionne (Madawaska, ME) though running with painful shin splints, finished
the race in 24th with a time of 32:36, also a seasonal best.
The UMPI Cross Country team
finished the season on a strong note, with each Owl runner physically peaking
at the right time. "These runners are all very dedicated athletes," commented
Head Coach Chris Smith, "they were focused and mentally strong all season. Today, they executed their plan and as a
result, did very well. They ran their
best when it counted."

Saturday, 13 October 2007 |
New Gloucester, Maine, October 13 - The UMaine Presque Isle men's and women's cross
country teams finished 9th and 8th respectively, as they
competed in the State of Maine Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships on
Saturday. The race, hosted by Bates College, was located at Pineland farms and was a rolling
course with ever changing terrain.
The UMaine Presque Isle women
ran a very strong 5K race despite the challenging course. Leah
Joy (Swans Island, ME) and Michelle
Phillips (Riverside, New
Brunswick)
both ran a solid race and stuck together for most of the course. However, Joy's strength took over at the last
300 meters as she was able to pull away and finish in 21:42, first for the Owl women and 54th overall. Phillips finished just 6 seconds behind her
teammate, coming in 55th with a time of 21:48. Julie Rugg (24:54, 107th) of South
Paris, ME, is coming into good shape and is quickly making
ground on both her teammates and the competition. Other UMPI finishers were Chandra Wisneski (24:57, 108th)
of Amherst, NH, Christine Roy (24:57, 109th) of St. Agatha, ME,
and Linda Gover (25:46, 116th),
all three of whom will be an important key for Owl success in the upcoming
Division III Independent meet on the 27th of October. Saturday's race was won by Laura Onderko of Bowdoin College in a time of 18:42. The Lady Owls finished 8th with a
total score of 215.
Amongst a competitive contingency
of runners, the UMPI men ran a very good race.
The two loop 5 mile course grew noticeably more difficult as the race
progressed, but the Owls were able to maintain their fast pace and finish
well. Emerson Wright (Presque Isle, ME) finished 70th overall (30:29) to lead the
Owls, which is a seasonal best time for Wright.
Also completing the course with seasonal best times were Kirk Robinson (Bingham, ME) who crossed the line in 80th with a time
of 31:04 and teammate Scott Graham (Waterville, ME) in 82nd (31:14). Kurt
Whisler (Fort Kent, ME) has recovered well from a nagging injury, finishing in
83rd (31:21). Other UMPI
finishers with best seasonal times were Chris
Rines (Caribou, ME) in (32:36, 96th) Andrew Ciszewski (Caribou, ME) in (32:42, 99th), Michael LeClair (Winslow, ME) in (37:19, 119th), and Zach Tupper (Lisbon, ME) in (40:52, 121st). Aaron
Schmersal (Winthrop, ME) also recovered well from a nagging injury to have a
strong performance. Schmersal finished
108th overall with a time of 33:55.
The Owls finished 9th overall with a total team score of 252.
Both teams are set up well
going into their next race which is at UMaine Machias on Saturday, October 21st. The women's race begins at 11:00, followed by the men at 11:45.

Saturday, 29 September 2007 |
The University of Southern
Maine placed six runners in the top 11 spots,
earning a team score of 29 points, to win the men's Pop Crowell Cross Country
Invitational Title on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Gordon
College. The Huskies finished ahead of Westfield
State (75 points) as Westfield's
John Messer took the individual crown, covering the 8k course in 26:34.
Amongst a high quality field of runners, the UMPI men all
ran a solid race in virtually perfect conditions. The course was flat, dry, and fast, allowing
for improved performances by most runners.
For the Owls, freshman Kurt
Whisler (Fort Kent, Me) led the squad with a time of 30:11 - good enough for 75th
overall. Whisler was followed by junior Emerson Wright (Presque Isle, Me) who
finished 83rd, in a time of 30:36.
Kirk Robinson (Bingham, Me)
was the 3rd Owl across the line in 97th place (31:12),
closely followed by teammate Scott
Graham (Waterville, Me) who finished just 3 seconds
behind taking the 100th spot in 31:16. Rounding out the top five for UMPI was Aaron Schmersal (Winthrop, Me), who took 125th (32:34). The Owl's 2:23
pack time, for the first five runners, helped to keep their score down at 371, as
they finished 13th of the 20 teams in participation. The performance of the day belonged to Chris Rines (Caribou, Me) who ran a
tremendous race (132nd, 32:44), improving his 8K time by 2:58 from just a week ago. Chris ran with a lot of heart, and gutted out
an impressive performance. Other UMPI
finishers were Andrew Ciszewski
(Caribou, Me) in 34:09 and Michael LeClair (Winslow, Me) in
38:28. Zach Tupper (Lisbon, Me), who ran a solid first mile before
re-injuring his knee on the course; he was not able to finish.
On the women's side, Gordon
College freshmen Hannah Matthews (Littleton,
Colo.) set a new home course record en
route to victory (229 finishers) with a time of 18:56. Wellesley College of Boston finished with
five runners in the top 12 to take the team title with 35 points. The highly competitive race was one of the
major factors for the improved Owl performances. Junior Michelle
Phillips (Riverview, NB)
ran a personal best on the slightly shorter course in 21:13 taking 46th overall; Phillips improved
her season's best by 2:14. Despite a nagging hip injury, Brittany Proulx (Tremont, Me) ran well,
finishing 84th in 22:07. Chandra
Wisneski (Amherst, MA)
who also ran a solid race, followed just 4 seconds behind Proulx (22:11) to take 85th overall. Having a breakout performance was first year
runner, Linda Gover (Caribou, Me) who
also had a personal best time for the season (130th, 23:53).
Other UMPI finishers were Christine Roy (St. Agatha, Me) finishing in 150th (24:35) and Julie
Rugg (South Paris, Me) finishing closely behind in153rd
(24:42); both women ran well, gained confidence, and improved their season
times. Heather Dionne (Madawaska,
ME) did not finish. The Owl women finished
with 396 points, 16th out of 22 overall.
The key to success at the Division III Independent
Conference Championships, held in four weeks, will depend largely on the number
4 through 7 runners continuing to improve their times. All Owl runners will need to be healthy and
running in top form in order to repeat as DIII Independent Champions.
