Even though Dick Ayre was the son of a university professor and
elementary
school teacher, he was not a dedicated student. In fact, he graduated
in the bottom 10% percent of his high school class. After raising hell
for awhile, he eventually was admitted to a university and began a
half-hearted attempt at pursuing a degree. Then he met Professor
Bernard Schecterman—and that’s when his life began to turn around. For
the first time Dick met someone who took him seriously, who challenged
him and energized him. His GPA soared. He not only graduated, but he
also went on to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology
(criminology & sociology of law). “Bernard Schecterman is why I am
teaching today. Teachers don’t realize the colossal impact they can
have on their students. I want to do for my students what Schecterman
did for me. I want to light a fire under them and push them to places
they never thought they could go. I want to help them reach their full
potential.” And reaching your full potential will take work. Dick
Ayre’s classes are not easy. Every year he tells his students that his
classes will be tough. “In this way, I honor them, their intelligence,
and the profession. If you are easy on students it insults them.” So
get ready to be challenged cause Professor Ayre will take you for a
ride, and not necessarily on his beloved Harley! |
