Project Explore

June 23-27, 2008

Project Explore is a summer enrichment program for students currently enrolled in grades 2 through 8. It is designed to provide exploratory activities that will develop cognitive potential and will integrate the talents, skills and creativity of each individual participant.

Morning Sessions

 

Terror, Trickery & Treasure, Jay Blackstone

Sail back to a time when pyrates were the terror of the seas!  Discover what their lives were really like!  Learn about Herry Morgan, Captain Kidd, and the most famous pyrate of all…Blackbeard!  Don’t be a landlubber; join with us and sail off to adventure!

 

Creative Mask Making, Ann Laraia

Are you creative?  Do you enjoy making messes?  Do you like masks?  Can you use a variety of materials such as paper, plastic and fabric to be creative?  If not, don’t worry!  I’ll show you how.  When you are done, you will have at least 5 different masks, lots of memories and guaranteed hours of fun.  Come join me.

Science Adventures, Jennifer Michaud

Do you know how a flashlight works?  Do you want to make one?  Have you ever dug for fossils?  Explored the solar system?  Come on a magical ride through the world of science.  Be sure to strap on your belts, cause we’re heading for places you’ve never seen, places you’ve never been…

 

Please Pass the Tissue, Beth Boone

Explore standard and non-standard units of measurement, inch-by-inch, as you use various geometric shapes in your tissue paper art.  Use your imagination, pentominoes, tangram pieces and measurement tools to create things like balloon bowls, collages, and shadow boxes.

 

Paper Arts, Beth Connell

Create one of a kind handmade books, cards and journals that you’ll treasure.  We’ll make a wide variety in all shapes and sizes using painting, printing, and collage to decorate them.

 

Gymnastics and Creative Movement, Denise Harrington

Explore the creativity of movement, dance and gymnastics.  Work as an individual or with a group.  By the end of the week, you’ll be part of a dynamic performance that you helped create.

 

 

Afternoon Sessions

 

Destination Dinosaur, Larry Berz

Bone up and join our Big Beast Bonanza.  This course will investigate the awesome and occasionally puzzling pieces of the “terrible lizard” era.

 

Science All Around You, Beth Boone

Learn to create awesome science experiments from materials found around your house and school.  You will keep a journal and photos will be taken each day to be a part of your journal. 

 

Artography from the Seven Continents Jennifer Michaud (grades 2-4)

Don’t forget your passport! Young globetrotters depart to each of the seven continents on an adventure as they encounter native literature, music, and food, while discovering the people, culture, and customs from around the world.  Use our creative minds to produce art projects related to the continent we visit that day.  Bon voyage!

 

All About Art, Karen Kirchner

Here’s an opportunity to create art projects each day using some of the following mediums:  charcoal, pastels, watercolor and acrylic paints, colored pencils, mosaic tiles, and clay.  Improve your drawing skills creating still lifes, gesture drawing, contour drawing and portraits.  Learn about some of the great master artists.

Have you ever wondered about the seven continents?  Who, What, Where are they located?  Do exotic birds, snakes and monkeys live on all the continents?  Let’s go exploring!  Join us as we begin our adventures around the world!

Morning Sessions

 

Sensational Solar System, Larry Berz

Set sail on the seas of space as we explore the collection of rock, gas, dirt, and dust known as the solar system through a feast of fact-filled fun for hands, heads, and legs.

 

It’s a Comical Life, Andy Weatherhead

Do you enjoy comic books or graphic novels?  Have you ever wished you could create your own comic?  This is your chance!  Not an artist?  That’s OK.  We will do all of our work using computers and cameras.

 

All About Me, Rebecca Holcombe

Enter your time machine and leap forward.  Wouldn’t it be fun to look back to who you were in 2008?  In this workshop, we will work with photos, word art, journaling, artwork, etc. to create a Book of ME.  We will also create some interactive photo journaling projects such as explosion boxes, mini books, or accordion folders.

 

Winged Wildlife Workshop, Travis Michaud

This place is going to the birds, and you can help.  Learn about the types of birds in Northern Maine, where they live and what they eat. Build a birdhouse and a birdfeeder and learn where to place them for birds to move in. Spread your wings and fly on in to join us.

 

Explore the Underground Railroad, Janice Wright

The Underground Railroad went right through Aroostook County.  The travelers found the way using maps made of quilts.  Are you interested in the underground railroad and how you can make a map quilt?  Join this journey.

 

Our World of Weather, Ken Wallingford (grades 5-8)

Thunderstorms, tornadoes, blizzards – just some of the many natural events in our world.  Join us in exploring the awesome facets of weather that can play a significant role in our lives.  We’ll also have a tour of the National Weather Service and WAGM .

 

 

Afternoon Sessions

 

Climb Low and Climb High, Amanda Morin

Bouldering is a great way to “hangout” for the summer.  Take your time, plan your moves, and see how being only inches from the ground can really get your heart pumping.  After we “have a hold” on that, we will put on the harnesses and work our way up the 37’ climbing wall.

 

Gymnastics and Creative Movement, Denise Harrington

Knights, Castles, & Catapults:  A Journey into the Middle Ages, Jay Blackstone

You will discover what it was like to live during the Middle Ages.  Castle construction and defense against siege weapons are crucial for your survival.  Do you have what it takes to become a knight?

 

Stage Left, Stage Right, Rebecca Holcombe

Do you have a yearning to be in the spotlight? Then join us for a look at the theater and how to put on a show. We will spend some time getting to know about the stage and theater and how it feels to become a character in a show. Cap the week by joining with your fellow participants to put on a show for your family and friends.

Would you like to learn to make cards, books and journals in many different shapes and sizes that fold in unconventional ways? Young artists will love creating these treasures using techniques such as printmaking, silk screening and paper folding.

Morning Sessions

 

A Map, a Canoe, and What to Do, Amanda Morin

Ever want to get away from it all and then realize you can’t because you don’t know how to get back???  Well this is the class for you.  During the week you will have the opportunity to work with topographical maps and compasses in order to navigate yourself from point A to point B and then back to point A.  We will also cover basic paddling and trip preparation.  Please join us and learn to enjoy what Northern Maine has to offer.

 

Human Videos, Leslee Mahon

Do you like music videos?  Send a message to the world using movement and music. We will use songs to address social issues in the community and school environment, such as violence, bullying, family struggles and world issues.

 

Creative Computer Composer, Benjamin Potvin

Do you like music? Ever thought about creating your own? Using computer technology and a little thought, it is possible to make a soundtrack to your life. No musical training required. Who knows … you may find a hidden talent and be a compositional wizard!

 

Our World of Weather, Ken Wallingford (grades 5-8)

Creative Cards, Elaine Ouellette

Tap into your creative energy to create awesome all occasion cards. Learn different artistic techniques using marbles, embossing powder, webbing spray and more. Have fun creating!

 

Forensic Lab, Leigh Grass

Participants will be introduced to the world of crime scene analysis and learn about the techniques that real forensic scientists use to solve crimes. The week will be full of hands-on activities and will stress the importance of science education and good lab skills in the world of forensics. Topics may include:  observation skills, evidence collection, fingerprints, hair, fibers, blood, handwriting analysis and chromatography.

 

Afternoon Sessions

 

Wilderness Survival Wildcraft, Travis Michaud

Have fun and learn how to stay alive if you find yourself stuck in the wilderness. Build a shelter, learn to keep warm without using matches, build a raft, navigate, and learn signaling. Also learn how early pioneers survived with very little supplies, having to make many of the things that they needed.

 

Film at 11:00, Jeffrey Roberts

Put your own twist to a news cast and let your acting abilities and creativity flow as you put together the film at 11. …or anytime you please.

 

Creating Memories, Elaine Ouellette

Discover the art of scrapbooking. Create an awesome album using computerized technology and the tools of the trade. Discover your creativity! Create a lifetime memory album!

A prerequisite for attendance is a letter of recommendation from school personnel (G/T Coordinator, Guidance Counselor, teacher) stating that, on the basis of one of the following, the student will benefit from the program in that particular area.

Participants' course choices are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the date the application and deposit are received.

Students may attend either the morning, afternoon or both sessions.

 

The experiences are designed to allow the student an opportunity to explore a chosen topic in depth. Parents are encouraged to let the students make the choice of activity (the choice must correlate with the teacher's recommendation). There are no tests or grades, and the settings are meant to be informal work or laboratory sessions. The interaction between the staff of professional educators and curious, eager young minds adds excitement to the activities.

 

Students should select courses based on their current grade level.

Exceptions will not be made.
