Aroostook County materials cover the County and the St. John River Valley,
including New Brunswick, Canada. The Aroostook County materials support UMPI
courses in history, social studies, and literature. Materials are also collected
with the interests of the non-university public in mind, but there is a
conscious effort to avoid duplication of local history collections made
available by the public libraries of Aroostook County. Funding for purchase and
maintenance of Aroostook County materials are made possible by the UMPI
Foundation; the Friends of the Aroostook County Historical Center at the
Library; the Farm Fund; and gifts from individuals and institutions. The
Aroostook County materials are primary and secondary sources, and come in a
variety of formats:
Books:
Books, both fiction and nonfiction, by Aroostook County authors and about the
County are cataloged and listed in URSUS, the
University of Maine's online catalog.
Census:
Census records for Aroostook County are available in book and in microfilm
formats. A microform reader/printer is located in the Special Collections room.
Charlotte
Melvin Collection:
The Charlotte Melvin Collection, named after its compiler, the late County
historian, consists of information files in the Special Collections' room on a
variety of subjects. Presently the structure of of the Charlotte Melvin
Collection is being modified.
Aroostook
County Residents:
A database consists of Aroostook County residents who have appeared in
biographical sources, in platt atlases, in obituaries, etc.
Maps, historical and topographical, of Aroostook County and of Maine are
stored in map cases. A complete list of USGS maps is
available on our web site.
Oral History:
Oral history audiotapes, periodicals relating specifically to Aroostook
County are cataloged, listed in URSUS, and
intershelved with the books in the Aroostook County/Maine Collection general
shelving area.
Videocassettes:
Videocassettes are listed in URSUS and are
intershelved along with books and periodicals in the Aroostook County/Maine
Collection general shelving area.
