Circulation

Circulation Services, a Summary

Faculty and staff may check books out of the library for one semester, and may renew the books for one additional semester. A faculty/staff identification card must be presented to check out library materials. Overdue reminders are sent one week after the material is due, and a subsequent reminder with the cost of the material sent one week later, if the material still has not been returned.

Students may borrow books from the open stacks for four weeks with one (1) renewal of twenty-eight (28) days. Other material may circulate for shorter periods. A VALIDATED, BARCODED STUDENT ID IS REQUIRED FOR BORROWING. Replacement costs will be assessed for lost books. The accumulation of unpaid library fines and/or bills will result in suspension of library borrowing privileges. Receipts are available when the item is returned to the circulation desk.

Circulation Policies

Patron Categories: The library recognizes six (6) patron types for lending purposes. Each of the patron types described below has specific privileges. Graduate students must get a library card from the campus at which they are registered. The Presque Isle campus will honor any current valid graduate student card within the University of Maine System.

1. PI Faculty- those faculty members who are currently teaching for the University of Maine at Presque Isle, whether full-time, part-time, or at an outreach site.

2. PI Staff- those staff members who are currently employed by the University of Maine at Presque Isle, whether full-time, part-time, or at an outreach site.

3. PI Student- those students who are currently enrolled at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, whether full-time, part-time, or at an outreach site.

4. PI Courtesy- anyone 18 years or older who lives in the surrounding area of Presque Isle and is not currently enrolled as a full-time or part-time student or employed, either full-time or part-time, as a Faculty/Staff member at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

5. Those who do not meet the above guidelines for age may take items out on a parent's courtesy card, but the parent must be present at the time of checkout, or they may bring their parent in for approval of the minor receiving a courtesy card.  Courtesy cards are renewed annually. A replacement fee of $5.00 is charged for a lost card. [Northern Maine Technical College students, currently enrolled either full-time or part-time, may have the courtesy card borrowing limit overridden by a full-time staff member.]

6. PI Department-Any department at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Loan Periods:

  • Circulating: Those items that may be checked out of the Library.
All circulating items may be checked out for four (4) weeks and are subject to recall after two (2) weeks. A circulating item may be renewed  for one (1) additional loan period if there are no holds placed on the material. We do not accept phone renewals. Borrowers may renew
their own books by using "View Your Own Record" option in URSUS.
  • Non-Circulating: Those items limited to in-library use.

Overdue Policy: Processing of Overdue Notices and Bills

  • Reminders:
Overdue reminders are sent out if the material is not returned within one (1) week of the due date.
  • Bills:
One (1) week later, a bill will follow if the material is still outstanding. After one (1) month a second bill is sent as a follow-up if the material has not been returned. A minimum $35 fee per item is charged for replacement and processing. The fee may be higher depending on the material in question. No fees will be charged if the item is returned.
  • Blocks:
In addition to the system-wide blocks, students with outstanding overdues/bills at the end of the month will have blocks placed on their records at the Registrar's Office and the Accounting Office. Courtesy card holders will have their user privileges revoked until the problem is resolved. While fines are not charged at UM Presque Isle, other campuses do charge fines, and the patron will be responsible.
