Cheerleaders

Cheerleading began as a sport to support the basketball teams after ASNS reopened after World War II in 1947. That first year, there were only 4 cheerleaders, but with time the sport increased in popularity. In fact, it became so popular that some years there were two cheering squads, a Varsity and Junior Varsity squad.

Since 1947, the popularity of cheerleading as a sport has fluctuated greatly. As a result, there were some years when there was not any cheering squad, but other years there were more than one. The latest emergence of a cheering squad was in 1995 when a group of girls organized cheering for the basketball games.
