Where are the Maine Documents?
The complete collection of Maine
State Documents at Presque Isle is shelved on the ground floor.
What does the collection contain?
All agencies of the Maine State
Government are required by law to contribute to the state
document depository system copies of any information they publish
for public use. This includes newsletters, special studies and
reports, statistics, laws and regulations, etc.
How does PI get the Documents?
The Maine State Library collects
the information from all the different state departments, and
sends periodic weekly shipment to the depository libraries.
How do I know if there are
documents on my topic?
The State Library publishes two
aids to locating documents: an irregularly published
"Checklist" of all the documents they receive, arranged
by the issuing agency; and subject index to the documents
collection (latest received was published in 1989). Documents are
designated "MSL" in the Maine State Library's holdings
in URSUS and MAINECAT. Since not all Maine Document holdings for
the PI location appear in URSUS, checking the MSL documents
number in our collection is advisable.
How are the documents arranged?
The documents are arranged
primarily by the state agency that issues them, and secondarily
by the type of document, i.e. handbooks, rules, special studies
or reports, etc...
Can the documents
be checked out?
Yes, with a month loan period.
