Each document gets assigned a number by which it is shelved. The
numbers have three parts.

Part One--identifies the agency:
This part will consist of a letter based on the name of the
agency, followed by a number to identify that agency from others
beginning with that same letter. Some numbers will have a slash
(/) followed by another number--this is to separate different
departments or offices within an agency.
Part Two--identifies the type of
publication: Part two will be a number from 1-36: 1-10 are the standard
subdivisions for different types of documents, as follows:

.6 Laws and Regulations
.2 General Publications
.7 Directories and Catalogs
.3 Bulletins
.8 Bibliographies
.4 Circulars
.9 Maps, Charts and Statistics
.5 Handbooks, Manuals,
Statistics
.10 Special Studies and Reports
11- Usually refers to serial publications
Part
Three--identifies the individual item: This will be the Year/Month, Volume/Issue, Report Number or a
number based on the title of the item (as in Co652) If you know
