Types of Instruction

Bibliographic Instruction is defined as course specific instruction in the sources and methods of research for a particular subject area. Bibliographic instruction will be performed on request for any University class. A one week notice is required for bibliographic courses.

Orientation is defined as a general overview of Library search resources and the organization of information in the Library. It is not intended to be a depth study of a particular area or concentration. Orientation is performed for two groups. Official orientation services are performed on a schedule basis for incoming freshman and transfer students. A one week notice is required.

Tours are defined as a brief overview of the Library in conjunction with other activities on campus such as a campus wide tour. Campus tours including the Library should be initiated through the Office of University Relations, 768-9453 or 768-9452. Procedures for the arrangement, size, and conduct of tours in the Library are the following:

  1. Area groups wishing an orientation or use-session in the Library should make reservations two weeks in advance. These sessions are subject to the availability of staff and facilities. The staff reserves the right to change the date of the session with one week notice.
  2. Members of the area group session must be at least the minimum courtesy card age at the Library, i.e. high school age or older. The exception to this rule is if the uniqueness of the material is such that it may be nowhere else in the area.
  3. The maximum number of individuals in area group not including the leaders, is to be no more then 15 at one time
  4. The purpose of the area group sessions should be to support serious research after exhausting the school and area libraries of resource.
  5. Items to be checked out as a result of an area group session at the Library are the responsibility of the institution. Maximum number of items per institution is 30. It is the responsibility of the institution to return the materials on time to the library. Individuals from the area group session may return to the Library at a later date and check further items out on their courtesy card. The individual is responsible for the return of the materials to the Library in this case.
