The Serials Department, ext. x 9593, acquires and maintains
the periodicals, newspapers, abstract services, indexes, annuals and other
materials issued periodically, including microforms, to which the library
subscribes.
Location & Checkout of Journals/Magazines:
Current issues of journals and magazines are kept alphabetically in
designated shelving on the main floor of the library. Back issues are held in
alphabetical order on the ground floor of the library, except for those that are
in microfiche or microfilm formats. Microform periodicals are stored in
designated cabinets on the main floor of the library. Faculty may check out
non-microform periodicals for three days; periodicals may not be renewed.
Current and back issues of newspapers are kept in the newspaper alcove on the
library main floor. Back issues of newspapers are kept for varying lengths of
time, depending on the title. The NEW YORK TIMES on microfilm, extends back to
September, 1851.
The "Presque Isle Star Herald" is in hardcopy for one year plus
current issues, and microfilmed back to 1857. A card catalog on the Library's
main floor indexes this local newspaper, back to 1986.
Photocopiers for users of the collections, other than special collections,
are located on the main floor of the library. One of these machines both reduces
and enlarges copies. Microfilm and microfiche reader/printers are located on the
Library's main floor. Copies made from photocopiers and from microform machines
cost $.10 each. Faculty and staff may charge this cost to their departments.
Ordering Periodicals: Requests for new journal or magazine subscriptions
should be submitted to your coordinator, who will submit your dean, on a periodical
request form. If you are requesting more than one new periodical
subscription, prioritize your requests: TOP, MEDIUM, LOW. The Dean will transmit
all approved periodical requests to the library. You may obtain a periodical
request form from the reference librarians or Gretchen
Brissette in technical services.
