URSUS includes only
those government publications distributed through the Depository
Program. WARNING! The location
listing on URSUS for government documents is incomplete and does
not list all UM Presque Isle holdings. For documents received
after July 1, 1995 limit your subject or word search to "PI
and to material type "11" (government
documents). For Documents received prior to this date, follow the
item search method as outlined below to determine whether the
document is available at the Presque Isle campus or another
campus.
A. FIND THE LINE ON THE
URSUS RECORD MARKED "DOC/REPT#." (This may be on the
second screen.)
1.
The first number listed here is called the Item Number. Item
Numbers are the key to determining what documents the library has
selected.
2.
The second number listed here is the Superintendent of Documents
(SuDoc) number. It is the call number used to locate that
specific publication. You will need both the item number and
SuDoc number.
B. GET THE ITEM NUMBER LIST
NOTEBOOK FROM THE REFERENCE DESK. This will be a list of all
Items Numbers the PI campus receives.
1. IF
THE NUMBER IS ON THE LIST:
Use the SuDoc number to find the publication on the shelves.
Government publications are shelved in a separate area near the
reference collection. Microfiche documents are filed in cabinets
nearby. Numbers prefixed by an asterisk *, are housed in
alternate locations (ie reference, periodicals, or stacks) and
will be listed at that PI location on URSUS. The SuDoc number
sometimes can be confusing to follow; ask for help at the
Reference Desk.
2. IF
THE NUMBER IS NOT ON THE LIST:
Request the publication from the Orono campus using the Requester
function on URSUS. Ask a staff member if you don't know how to
use this feature.
MONTHLY CATALOG OF U.S.
GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS (Gov Docs GP 3.8:):
This is a general index in book
form to government publications. The Monthly Catalog will list
some publications not found in URSUS. The Presque Isle campus
currently receives this title in cd format and retains a five
year backfile (in paper).
