The Technical Services Division of the library
acquires, indexes, catalogs, classifies, and processes
library material for use by the academic and local
community. This library material includes books,
audiovisuals, recording discs and tapes, maps and
microforms, compact discs, and electronic resources.
The Catalog Department receives items from the
Acquisition Department (new titles), from government
documents collection, and as gifts, for indexing, subject
analysis, classification, cataloging, and processing for
shelves. These titles are cataloged with the latest
cataloging rules. These include: Anglo-American
Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed.; the requirements of the UM
System Library automated services, URSUS; and classified
with the Library of Congress classification system in
Marc (machine readable) format for input into both the
URSUS database, OCLC database, and Mainecat.
Titles are processed with the following priorities:
Reference
General Collection
Government Documents
Special Collections
Gifts
The cataloger(s) are kept cognizant of new cataloging
rule changes, updated subject headings, new authority
headings, etc. through regular reading of the Monthly
Catalog Service Bulletin, and of "Additions and
Changes in L.C. Classification. "Catalogers are
included in the library literature routing. The cataloger
is a member of the UMS Cataloging Standards Committee.
The Acquisitions department receives requests from the
Collection Development Committee (currently the Library
Director assisted by the professional librarians).
Requested titles are ordered through the system-wide
acquisitions system. Faculty submit request cards to
their division chairs, and staff submit requests to their
supervisors. Priorities are indicated by the requesters
and by Academic Affairs in this sequence:
Reference Material
General Collections (top priority items for the first few months, medium and low priority items considered as money
is available)
Juvenile award title
Murphy award titles
Maps
Special Collection titles for Aroostook and Maine
Faculty and staff may be notified of the ordering and
receiving requests in special instances. Division Chairs
are notified of the titles received, and the amount of
money encumbered and expended in their division each
month.
