The museum includes an extensive display of northern Maine as illustrated by topographical maps and aerial photographs. The topographical maps displays are in two scales. The 1:62,500 (essentially, 1 inch = 1 mile) mosaic of topographical maps covers all of northern Maine north of Houlton. Each individual map has 15 minutes of longitude and latitude between the corners. The 1:24,000 (7.5 minutes between corners) mosaic covers a smaller area in greater detail. This area extends from Mars Hill north to the now closed Loring Air Force Base, and from Ashland east to the Canadian border. A three-dimensional presentation of the Presque Isle 7.5 minute map, built by Earl Oman, illustrates the use of topographical contour lines. An aerial photo mosaic that shows most of eastern Aroostook County was donated by Delorme Mapping, Inc. |
