Atlantic Leatherback Sea Turtle

Sea Turtle

The largest of all living turtles, the Atlantic Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) can reach sizes of over 2 meters. Despite its large size the animal feeds primarily on jellyfish. It is generally found in open areas of the Atlantic Ocean, but frequently appears in New England waters and north to Newfoundland during the summer months. This specimen was probably collected along the Maine shore during the early part of the 20th century.
