Teacher Education: Special Education Concentration

Educators can transform school environments by encouraging all students to live up to their capacities, realize their dreams, and find a place in the pluralistic world.

If you are interested in working with students with special learning, behavioral, or physical needs, consider a concentration in special education. Special educators serve the most interesting, challenging, and rewarding population of students in our schools. Because no two students are alike, labels such as autism, learning disability, or cerebral palsy fall away when planning to support the unique learning needs of an individual student. Youll learn about instructional technology, cooperative learning, multiple intelligences and a multitude of instructional and behavioral strategies that go beyond the typical classroom approaches. We advocate a positive mindset and well-developed collaborative skills for working with families, educators, and other committed professionals. We believe that special educators are lifelong learners who continually learn and improve their skills to enhance student learning. If you are fascinated with how to help students learn when they are faced with challenges, you might be a candidate for our special education concentration. Or, if you want to polish your knowledge and skills for teaching a diversity of students in any classroom, consider this concentration.
