Teacher Education: Special Education Concentration

UMPI student tutoring middle school student

The Special Education Concentration offers possibilities for the following groups:

Elementary Education Majors

A sequence of 24 credits in special education can be selected by students seeking an elementary education BS degree at UMPI and wishing to pursue special education as their concentration (in lieu of another subject area major). Students in the elementary education program complete a general education core, a professional education sequence of courses, and a subject area major or special education concentration. The knowledge and skill acquired in this concentration should apply to a diversity of learners, with and without special needs.  In combination with an elementary certificate, the special education concentration should prepare a more desirable teacher candidate in the eyes of future employers.

Conditionally or Transitionally Certified Teachers

UM Presque Isle offers a sequence of courses totaling 24 credits that may be applied towards Maines Endorsement (282) Teacher of Students with Disabilities, K-8. The Maine Department of Education Office of Certification issues endorsements through transcript analysis. Current requirements for Endorsement (282) Teacher of Students with Disabilities (can be found on the Maine Teacher Certification Website).

Educational Technicians

Ed Techs seeking coursework may take courses in the special education concentration.
