Teacher Education: Special Education Concentration

Special Education Teacher Shortage Nationwide

A dramatic teacher shortage exists in special education in Maine and nationwide! According to the Final Report of the K-12 Educator Recruitment and Retention Commission (April, 2001), special education, more than any other certification area (e.g., mathematics, foreign language) has the highest percentage of teachers employed without full certification. In 2000, there were 12,000 openings for special education teachers nationwide. The designated teacher shortage area translates into many job opportunities in Maine. The Paul Douglas Scholarship Program provides forgiveness of student loans for students who become special education teachers.
