BASICS - Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students

BASICS is an alcohol screening and intervention that involves two one-on-one meetings with Counseling Staff and the completion of e-CHUG. The introductory meeting honestly discusses the student's alcohol use, with the understanding that the goal of the session is to understand why high-risk drinking occurs. The student should leave the session with a feeling of introspection and empowerment. Next, e-CHUG will be completed by the student, comparing the student's alcohol patterns and habits with their peers. Finally, a concluding meeting with Peter assists the student in determining whether their alcohol use is detrimental to any aspect of their health, whether it be physical, emotional, academic, or financial. The student and Peter work together to critically review the student's drinking patterns, and brainstorm ideas for minimizing any negative impact. For more information, contact Denise Hamlin at X9791.
