Chair's Welcome Message

Thank you for exploring the School of Science and Mathematics at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. We offer top quality science and mathematics undergraduate B.A. and B.S. programs in a small campus environment where small class size encourages personal interaction between students and faculty.

Our location offers ready access to more than five million acres of the great North Maine Woods, nature’s field laboratory for students interested in the natural sciences. It is home to the last  stronghold of the native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) in the eastern US. In conjunction with the Outdoor Adventure Program International (OAPI), we provide opportunities to students to conduct field work in biology, environmental studies, structural and glacial geology. Study with professional biologists from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Explore the serpentine geology of the alpine areas of the Gaspé Peninsula. Climb Mt. Katahdin or search for mushrooms in the forests of the Aroostook River valley. Imagine camping and canoeing in a region most people can only dream of exploring as part of your academic program.

In addition to field opportunities, we provide top quality laboratory instruction in medical science, medical laboratory technician, and biology. Laboratory classes are hands on, small in size, and provide one on one interaction with exemplary faculty. The Aroostook Medical Center and the State Agricultural research farm are close by and provide additional opportunities to interested students.

Our mathematics B.S. program is exemplary and provides opportunities to combine a degree in math with education or science majors. Our faculty works with the Maine School of Science and Mathematics, a magnet high school, which is located thirty-five miles away in Limestone.

Come join our adventure, whether it involves canoeing the Allagash River, exploring the world through a microscope, mapping the Norumbega Fault with GIS, confronting current medical issues, or pushing the limits of environmental chemistry, calculus, or differential equations. So pack your skis and snowshoes and leave the mundane behind for four years on the frontiers of science and mathematics!
