2006 GIS Day at UMPI: A Great Day and a Success

UMPI and the School of Science and Mathematics (SSM) celebrated its first GIS Day on Wednesday, Nov. 15. For the firs time, almost all the GIS users and people who are involved in GIS applications in northern Maine came together, exchanged their thoughts and experience and celebrated the first GIS Day in northern Maine.

NDMC, Micmac Environmental Laboratory, Matson Consulting, together with UMPI GIS class students presented their maps and projects in the poster session held on the second floor of Folsom Hall from 12:00-6:30 PM. Local public service managers and municipal department directors from such as Maine Public Services and Fort Fairfield visited the poster displays and talked about future collaborations.

In the evening, Mary Jo Kimble, Soil Scientist from USDA-NRCS Presque Isle Service Center and Tara King, Cartographer from USDA-NRCS State Office of Bangor jointly made a great presentation on How Soil Survey Uses Arc GIS in Producing Quality Maps for Consumer Use.  Folsom 101B was crowded with students, faculty, and audience from local community including USDA Presque Isle Service Center director and USDA-NRCS Presque Isle coordinator. More than 20 questions were asked and discussed. Students also had a chance to learn how to use stereoscope to relate landscape features to soils.

Some pictures taken during the day are published below. All are appreciated for their attendance and participation in the events!!!
