If you spend some time in the new Gentile Hall, you might just catch a glimpse of Ms. Gentile herself. A portrait of Caroline Gentile, painted by UMPI student TJ White, is on display“Professor [Andy] Giles asked me if I would be interested in doing a portrait of Ms. Gentile when I was in the studio working on the final series of Painting III,” White said. “Quite frankly I had never met Ms. Gentile, but knew of her quality, of her virtues, and of her contributions to the school and the community. So the image in my mind's eye was somewhat planned, but I needed references to work with.” White worked from several photographs of Ms. Gentile. He strove to create a realistic image of a woman he’d never seen in person. Even for a skilled artist, this was a difficult task. The opening ceremony for Gentile Hall, which included the unveiling of the painting, began at 10AM on Jan 21. The event began with a word from President Burgher. Those present were informed of the many features of Gentile Hall and of the sponsors. After several more speeches, it was time for White to unveil his portrait of Ms. Gentile. “I unveiled the painting with her seated directly in front of it. I introduced myself and talked briefly with her after the formal ceremony was completed,” said White. Ms. Gentile gave her own quiet speech, and then refreshments were served. “Her family individually came up to me at different occasions after the ceremony to tell me that I captured her presence and [they] praised my work,” White said. His first time using oil paints resulted in a work reminiscent of some 1950’s illustrations. “Overall, it was rather special and I'm grateful that I could be apart of paying tribute to a very respectable woman,” said White, “This was my first commission and no matter the actual result, I've added another brush stroke to my art experience.” |
