The Financial Aid Office has
good news for students who feel overwhelmed with college debt and the price of
education. Several scholarships have been released and are now available to
UMPI students. Flyers informing students of the new scholarships can be seen throughout the University on bulletin boards, newspaper stands and in offices, but many students are still unaware of these opportunities. With the deadlines for some scholarships approaching as early as February, now is the time for students to start applying, according to financial aid officials. Students interested in the scholarships can obtain information about them by visiting the University's Financial Aid Office. Students are free to look at all the scholarships and find which ones they may be eligible to receive. There are various guidelines for the scholarships. Some may require the student to have a higher Grade Point Average and others do not specify a certain GPA. There are also specialized scholarships designed for a specific type of student depending on major, location, or age. For students who are undeclared or feel they don't fit in a specific group, there are general scholarships. These types of scholarships are open to anyone. Most scholarships have a very simple application process. The application may ask for important information like education, history, and transcripts. Others require students to provide more detail, asking for references or an essay. Many scholarships found on campus are local, making the chances of receiving the scholarships much higher than larger, national scholarships. According to popular college search websites, such as collegeboard.com and fastweb.com, students searching for scholarships should start local, but applying for national scholarships that cover a larger area can also be beneficial. A list of more websites offering information can be found at the Financial Aid Office. Regardless of the type or award amount, scholarships are helpful resources to pay for college. Unlike loans, scholarships do not have to be paid back and provide incentive to hard-working students. Students who have not yet applied for these scholarships can find them in the Office of Financial Aid in Preble Hall and should also be on the lookout for future scholarships as they become available. |
