As the election campaign comes down to the final week, the Maine Democrats are in full swing. From their local headquarters at Victory Office, 404 Main St. in Presque Isle, they've been getting the word out about the Democratic ticket. Through phone calls, letter writing and going door to door, they've promoted the positive change that the Democrats seek in this year's election. The positive feedback they've received pledging support for their candidates makes them think they're on the right track. Saturday, Oct. 25, was no exception. Volunteers spread out and canvassed several communities in Presque Isle. One volunteer said, "Canvassing has been very successful for the Party this year." Going door to door gave volunteers of the Democratic Party a chance to meet voters and see what issues were of most importance to them. The economy and job security were high on the list of concerns. Presque Isle has nearly 40 percent (U.S Census) of its population either nearing or already in retirement. This, coupled with the closing of several large businesses or employers laying off workers, makes the financial outlook of the area shaky. This knowledge will weigh heavily on voters next Tuesday. The Democrats on Saturday were also reminding people to vote on Nov. 4. They believe this is going to be a close race where every vote counts. The Democrats' message is one of positive change. In less than a week, we'll find out what possibilities the future will hold. |
