It's a time of change for the College Democrats. They're looking to expand their group and spread their message throughout the campus. During this transitional time, interim president Natalie St. Pierre has been shouldering the responsibility of the group. She graciously sat down with me to discuss their plans and goals.
"At this point, we're reformulating the group, starting over," St. Pierre said. Their objective is to form a larger group so that they can do more things. St. Pierre said that their main goal is to get all students registered to vote. And that's no matter what side of the political aisle they sit on."We're looking to make sure that people vote. It's not so much who they vote for, just that they do vote. It's important to be heard." St. Pierre said that the group has mainly been watching the presidential and vice-presidential debates on television in group settings, attending the Susan Collins versus Tom Allen debate and volunteering at the phone bank to campaign for the local Democratic candidates. A unique aspect of this group is their desire not to take any money from the student senate. The senate sets money aside for student groups to use. The College Democrats, however, have chosen not to use any of the senate's money. Instead, they raise it on their own through different fundraising events. The College Democrats meet biweekly on Fridays. Their plans for the election night are unknown at this time. |
