McCartney abstract McCartney, K., Kimball, R. L. and Swetnam, J. (1992): Teaching Physical Geology and laboratory courses by intective television. Journal of Geological Education, 40:367-372.

Recent advances in telecommunications allow classes in which the teacher and student can interact in a normal classroom atmosphere despite there being considerable distance between them. This can be done in an ordinary classroom that is equipped with cameras that transmit "real time" to a number of remote sites. The remote sites are fully interactive, that is, the students are able to ask questions directly to the teacher. Relatively minor modifications are needed to teach physical geology on such a system. The new technologies also allow the easy incorporation of visual images into the geology lecture.
