An Active Planet

When hydrogen played oxygen,
And the game had just begun,
Hydrogen racked up two fast points
But oxygen had none.
Then oxygen scored a single goal,
And thus it did remain
Hydrogen 2 and oxygen 1
Called off because of rain.

There rolls the deep where grew the tree.
Oh Earth, what changes hast thou seen!

- Tennyson

The evolution of the world can be compared to a display of
fireworks that has just ended: some few red wisps, ashes and smoke.
Standing on a cooled cinder, we see that slow fading of the suns,
and we try to recall the vanished brilliance of the origin of the worlds.

- G. Lemaitre
