ANNOUNCEMENT

(9/16/2007)

Key words: GIS Day, posters, demonstrations, UMPI.

GIS Day is a grassroots event that formalizes the practice of geographic information systems (GIS) users and vendors of opening their doors to schools, businesses, and the general public to showcase real-world applications of this important technology. The event is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett–Packard, and ESRI. GIS Day 2007 will be held on Nov. 14, 2007.

The first GIS Day in Presque Isle-Caribou area of northern Maine was celebrated at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) last year in November 15. The organizers of the event included UMPI GIS Program and Northern Maine Development Commission (NMDC). The event was hosted by UMPI GIS class and the advisors were Dr. Chunzeng Wang of UMPI and Mr. Ken Murchison of NMDC. This year's GIS day will be the second at the University.

On the GIS Day at UMPI, there will be poster displays on the second floor in Folsom Hall. Presenters include UMPI GIS class students and other organizations that use GIS. An opportunity to touch our GIS computing program (ArcGIS) will be also offered.

In the evening of the last year's GIS Day, a presentation titled How Soil Survey Uses Arc GIS in Producing Quality Maps for Consumer Use was given by Mary Jo Kimble, Soil Survey subset leader from USDA-NRCS Presque Isle Service Center and Tara King, Cartographic Technician from USDA-NRCS State Office of Bangor.

All are welcome.
